About this book
The interest in climbing and walking robots (CLAWAR) has remarkably augmented over recent years. Novel solutions for complex and very diverse application fields (exploration/intervention in severe environments, personal services, emergency rescue operations, transportation, entertainment, medical, etc.), has been anticipated by means of a large progress in this area of robotics. Moreover, the amalgamation of original ideas and related innovations, the search for new potential applications and the use of state of the art supporting technologies permit to foresee an important step forward and a significant socio-economic impact of advanced robot technology in the forthcoming years. In response to the technical challenges in the development of these sophisticated machines, a significant research and development effort has to be undertaken. It concerns embedded technologies (for power sources, actuators, sensors, information systems), new design methods, adapted control techniques for highly redundant systems, as well as operational and decisional autonomy and human/robot co-existence. This book contains the proceedings of the 7th Climbing and Walking Robots 2004 (CLAWAR 2004) Conference offering the international scientific community one of the most excellent forums for academics, researchers and industrialists interested in this motivating area of climbing and walking robots. It provides a wide forum of original state-of-the-art contributions from various industrial and new/emerging research fields, presenting a full picture of climbing and walking robots. The conference, held in Madrid, Spain, September 22-24 2004 was organized by the Thematic Network "CLAWAR 2" and funded by the European Commission under the GROWTH Programme.

Fantastic for reducing allergies, may make you a neat freak!

We bought this Roomba 880 robot vacuum cleaner to help clean our family vacation apartment. The apartment is only about 700 sq feet and is occupied for about 3-4 months of the year, so lots of dust accumulates between visits. I have a very severe dust mite allergy, and I usually sneeze for most of the time we are in the apartment, even if we damp dust and HEPA vacuum it with our Dyson canister vacuum cleaner soon after we arrive. I was very curious (and skeptical) to see whether Minnie (our Roomba) could alleviate these symptoms and reduce our cleaning workload while on vacation. The apartment has mixed surfaces. About two thirds of it is tiled and the rest is carpet, including the bedrooms. The floor plan is fairly open, except that the 2 bedrooms and bathrooms are separate along a corridor. This is important when considering how to use the robot most efficiently. Now that we have had Minnie for around a month, I have to say that she (has to be a she - the error messages... 5/5 Dawn Tarin (California) - See all my reviews, June 8, 2014

    So worth it!

We purchased the Roomba 880 directly from iRobot right when it came out. We were looking for a new vacuum anyway, and the reviews about how it handled pet hair sold it for us. We have 2 cats in 1,000 sq ft apartment. It's a constant battle against cat hair and tracked litter. So far, the Roomba has done really well with both! The rubber rollers on the bottom have been the biggest difference. Our old vacuum had the bristled roller on the bottom and wouldn't even rotate it was so tangled in hair. Now, hair isn't a problem. And the rubber rollers have enough give that when it starts to eat something like an iPhone charger, it just stops, and we can easily pull out whatever is caught (no damage to any items it's pulled in so far). When we first got it, we ran it several times in a row – each ending with the "full bin" light. Definitely made me feel like we were missing a lot of the dust when we were vacuuming ourselves! Now we have it set to run every day, and it... 5/5 katie0123 - See all my reviews This review is from: iRobot Roomba 880 Vacuum Cleaning Robot For Pets and Allergies (Misc.) I am in love!

I had a Roomba many years ago when they first came out. I was rather underwhelmed. It was loud, held very little dirt, got stuck often, and seemed to barely clean. I handed it 'down' to my mother who also rejected it. It sat unused on a lonely shelf until it made it's way to a yard sale. That Roomba was a novelty. This Roomba is a masterpiece. Or at least the sonnet that I'm going to compose to it will be. I have carpet in two bedrooms and the rest of the house is hardwood or linoleum. First the carpets - holy cow, I had no idea they were that dirty! The Roomba gets out dirt my full-size vacuum cleaner misses. I set it out to clean my bedroom and it filled up with dirt before it finished. The amount of dirt and dust was astonishing. I started it again, this time it filled up with dirt but it did finish. The third time it cleaned the entire bedroom, bathroom, and walk-in closet and was only half full. I started running it every other day and it never fills up... 5/5 tharp83 (New York, NY USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) With proper expectations set, this is the droid you've been looking for.

We've had this little guy for about three months and have been using it pretty much every other day. I couldn't be happier with it's performance. This little robot is a helper, and keeping that in mind, you'll find your floors stay much cleaner in between your more dedicated cleaning sessions. That's not to say you're completely out of the picture. You have a responsibility to use this robot, and while his AI is quite impressive at times, it is still an appliance. This is not entirely a "set it and forget it" robot. Think of it as other helpful appliances. Your dishwasher is great! But you still need to properly load it, pre-rinse when necessary, and occasionally still scrape some dry food off of a fork with your thumbnail. Your washer and dryer are fantastic! But you still need to make time for use in your evenings, transfer from one to the other, and darn it, they still don't fold your clothes. The Braava, is like an appliance in that way... 5/5 Dan (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews This review is from: iRobot Braava 380t Floor Mopping Robot (Misc.) Good for floors that you cant use Scooba on

I have been a fan of the IRobot series of robot for several years now since originally purchasing a 300 series Scheduler (named Fred) and then later on the Scooba (named Wilma). And although not perfect, I have a few gripes about each, I still like these little cleaning wonders. The Braava 380 floor mopping robot is one of the latest offerings for iRobot with the Braava 380t being the higher end model of their floor mopping series and an alternative to the wet mopping Scooba. Since moving a couple years back and going from a house that had the type of flooring that a Scooba was ok to use with (i.e. ceramic tile and linoleum) to a different home with wood laminate that is not recommended for use on, I decided to look for an alternative to my Scooba. I originally spotted the Mint and decided to wait to see how the device faired and then after seeing IRobot buying Mint and making a version of their own, I went ahead and got the Braava (you guessed it named Pebbles).The... 4/5 JWink - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Good for maintenance, but will not clean a dirty floor

I so desperately wanted this to work. As the mom of two kids under five, my floors remain perpetually sticky thanks to spilled juice, dribbled dinner, and a host of other toddler-induced messes. I was thrilled thinking that this floor mopping robot would help make my work load easier. It made me sad to learn that it did little more than just wipe my floors down. I tried it a few different ways: once with the dry sweeping cloth, once with water and the wet mopping cloth, and once with a swiffer wet cloth. It is super easy to use and after the first time I used it, it seemed to learn my kitchen fairly quickly. The bottom of the cloth showed that it had picked up some dirt, but there were still several spots of the floor that I later had to go back and clean by hand. If your floors are already in fairly good condition and you just want a quick touch-up between deep cleanings, I think the Braava can handle that, but if your floors are genuinely in need of mopping, this isn't going to make... 3/5 Mama Bear - See all my reviews, October 8, 2013

The Roomba 500 series almost perfected.

I've got three Roomba 500s (a pair of 560s and a 570), and I love 'em. Rock solid reliable, easy to work on, and do a great job keeping my floors clean. These Roombas aren't toys, they actually clean the floors. In fact I've gone behind them with my Dyson just out of morbid curiosity and all I got was an empty bin. Sure, a Roomba can't pick up as much dirt as a regular vacuum in one pass, but that's why they're programmed to cover the same area of carpet multiple times. And in some ways the Roomba is better than my Dyson. Why?Areas of my house that get vacuumed every week without effort:* Under my bed.* Under my dresser.* In the back corners of my closet where a regular vacuum can't go.* Underneath my reclining theater seats.* Under my basement work bench and utility sink.* ...and on and on...The 600s series is even better, as they include the Aero Vac dust bin, and the upgraded cleaning head module from the 700... 5/5 Ryan Barnhart (Cincinnati, OH USA) - See all my reviews, September 24, 2012

    IRobots never die

This is my fourth IRobot and they never seem to die. The first three are still going strong after several years of use, without any problems or any repairs aside from a yearly new battery. Just make sure to leave these plugged into the wall, sitting in their docks, all the time to keep the battery from dying prematurely. It also helps to preserve the battery to fully run them at least once a week but it's not critical to do that.I empty the dirt canisters and clean the brushes after every use, which I don't find to be a problem at all. I have a Scuba also, the floor mopping robot, of the same brand, and it also is a workhorse. I've told all my friends about my IRobots, and several have gotten them and love them too. One of them said that after a while his Roomba started going in circles but I told him to turn it over and check out the brush and front wheel for anything caught on it and sure enough, he cleaned a long thread from the front drive wheel and it's good as... 5/5 AKN - See all my reviews, October 19, 2012

    iRobot 630 best purchase!

0 5/5 KHenery - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: iRobot Roomba 630 Vacuum Cleaning Robot for Pets (Misc.) I recently purchased the iRobot 630 for Pets and it has gone above and beyond my expectations. I have an 80 lb. Lab and a huge longhaired cat, so I was skeptical of how this vacuum would handle all of the animal hair and dirt they track inside. I have to say this vacuum does a better job than I do manually vacuuming with my Dyson! My roomba carefully cleans along the baseboard and legs of furniture with her brush to remove any and all traces of pet hair, dust, and debris. As well, it has no problem cleaning an assortment of rugs including a large cowhide. The iRobot uses a zig zag type manuever to ensure all 1200 sq ft is perfectly clean. Cleaning the brushes and emptying the disposal unit is a breeze, and it keeps its charge for about 2 hours. After it has finished its cleaning cycle, or is tired the Roomba carefully docks itself back onto the charger. I would definately reccomend this product! 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 21, 2012

iRobot Braava - loved by this homeowner (and her cats too)!

I love this little robot. It's so quiet even my cats adore it; they follow it around and pretend to be scared (Run away! Run away!) when it turns around and appears to chase thrm. Then they take a nap on the sofa while it cleans the room.It would almost be worth the money just for that show every time i use it, but it also does an exceptional job cleaning my hardwood floors. It works far better than the roomba that i had, which was excrutiatingly loud and worse, it was so messy to clean out after it vacuumed i always had to clean the floor again AFTER using it.The iRobot Braava is not a vacuum though, it pushes (or drags) its pile of dust and cat hair along as it goes. Surprisingly it doesn't deposit any of it along it's way. I did accidentally begin (and have continued) by using what is supposed to be the wet cloth on its dry cleanings - maybe that helps, since it's thicker than a swiffer cloth. Cleaning Buddy

This iRobot Braava 320 works great on my ceramic tile floors. There is a large (nine feet by twenty-one feet in some places) foyer in this house that gets high usage from two entry doors. Off the foyer is an eight by twelve kitchen floor. Although the kitchen creates an "L" there is no obstruction -- it's just one smooth expanse of ceramic tiles. On the "sweep" setting, the iRobot takes care of this entire expanse, even when the direction cube is placed in the foyer. With the microfiber cloth, it does a fantastic job of dust-mopping the floor. When I first used it, I was fascinated by the criss-crossing patterns the iRobot was making, grabbed my Swiffer, and dust-mopped nearby sections of floor. Later, when the microfiber cloth was in the laundry, I attached a Swiffer dry cloth to the iRobot cleaning pad -- it fit perfectly. The microfiber cloth grabs some of the larger debris, but the Swiffer cloths don't do as good a job -- they're better for dust and fine... 5/5 J. A. We have run it once downstairs and upstairs.THE PLANThe plan is to run it during the day upstairs and to run it at night downstairs. When we return, we put on the charger and let it clean at 2AM downstairs.OBSERVATIONSThe upstairs (approx. 1000 sqft) is a combination of wood floors, tile in the bathrooms, scatter rugs (bath style and oriental). Love it...wish I hadn't waited so long to get one.

I don't have to vacuum anymore and my floors have never been so clean. I scheduled it to run every day. It is amazing how much dust and other debris this thing picks up. All it takes is a 5 minute clean up of the Roomba each day-dump the bin, shake out the filter and clean the 2 rollers. It runs just over an hour before going back to base to charge. This review is from: iRobot Roomba 650 Vacuum Cleaning Robot for Pets (Misc.) I don't have to vacuum anymore and my floors have never been so clean. I scheduled it to run every day. It is amazing how much dust and other debris this thing picks up. All it takes is a 5 minute clean up of the Roomba each day-dump the bin, shake out the filter and clean the 2 rollers. It runs just over an hour before going back to base to charge. I have a large house, I run it in the main living area each day, and I move it manually to other parts of my house about 2x a month. Fantastic cleaning robot!

I must say, I'm impressed with the mapping system on this little guy. I have a very large (20'X20') open living room/kitchen area giving plenty of obstacles to confuse it. There's a staircase (which it deftly avoids), an island, a kitchen table with chairs, a couch and a number of tables for it to go under, an area rug and a piece of curved beveled glass on the floor that serves as a stand for a fireplace (which it surprisingly does not ride up on). Also, the room is overall "U" shaped with several entryways. This is the only robotic cleaner that has been able to figure this room out in its entirety. Other things to note is the room has a large fan and high, sloped ceilings and it can still find it's way.My Roomba did terribly. It would get stuck in one section, the Neato XV was OK but would miss some parts. This thing does a great job of freshening up the floor and getting at just about everything due to it's small size! One thing I did not know is the Mint... 5/5 Ryan Mckenney - See all my reviews, September 9, 2010

Mint v Roomba: Which is hte Better Sucker

The short version, for those reading many reviews quickly is this; the Mint has many advantages over the Roomba on a feature for feature basis. But at the end of the day, the Roomba is the better product and picked up a LOT more pet hair. Here's the longer version with the gory details:Both of these are great innovations. True, the Mint is far quieter, cheaper and cooler looking than the Roomba. It is also easier/cheaper to maintain. But the Roomba gets more dust off the floor, despite the fact that the Mint can get under places Roomba can not, and Roomba returns to its base for a re-charge on it's own, as needed. The Mint just dies in place. The guy on here who's review said that he sent his Roomba on a mission and then sent the Mint after it to discover dirt the Roomba missed, would have had the same result if he performed the experiment in reverse. I know b/c I did just that. these two devices clean differently, so any comparison is useless... 2/5 dusthater - See all my reviews This review is from: Mint Automatic Hard Floor Cleaner, 4200 (Kitchen) The short version, for those reading many reviews quickly is this; the Mint has many advantages over the Roomba on a feature for feature basis. Beware False Hopes

First: notice the 5-star rating that I have given this.I agree with all of the 5-star reviewers: this product is worth the price (have had it about 6 weeks now). I have used it on vinyl (Congoleum/linoleum) floors, tile floors and wooden floors. It works well on all of them. Time will tell more. However, rather than repeat what others have said, I will describe some aspects that might disappoint you when/if you buy it, but these do not outweigh the benefits.- This does NOT do a deep clean. That takes elbow grease and this, naturally, is not heavy enough to scrub that well (you wouldn't want it to be that heavy). You will have to do a deep clean first. The Mint will then maintain that clean floor. I use it about once a week.- The designers did a generally good job, except for the week when they all took vacation at once and let the janitor decide where to put the charging port. Believe or not, these idiots put the port in a spot on the... 5/5 Careful Reviewer - See all my reviews This review is from: Mint Automatic Hard Floor Cleaner, 4200 (Kitchen) First: notice the 5-star rating that I have given this.I agree with all of the 5-star reviewers: this product is worth the price (have had it about 6 weeks now). What Fun!

In a newly remodeled house with laminate wood floors, I see a lot of dust everyday; Roomba 770 has been a good fit. What I've noticed after three weeks of daily use - the pros:- Roomba does a great job in empty rooms; the entire downstairs comes out dust free.- Works well under beds, chairs, wide tables, and kitchen cabinet toekick.- Has great sensors for walls, boxes, pillows, and goes beautifully over heavy rugs back onto hardwood.- Roomba didn't like the fringe on my oriental carpets, but it didn't choke on it like my big vacuum did and kept on going.- The electronic barriers work well, but there is a learning curve on how to place them properly (The signal is cone-shaped). These need 2 "C" batteries each (4 total, not included).- It is not difficult to maintain: emptying the dust collection, removing brushes and using brush cleaner, wiping off sensors, moving it to a new room. The cons:- need to watch Roomba do a room before... 4/5 Holly H (Pasadena, CA) - See all my reviews This review is from: iRobot Roomba 760 Vacuum Cleaning Robot for Pets and Allergies (Kitchen) In a newly remodeled house with laminate wood floors, I see a lot of dust everyday; Roomba 770 has been a good fit. I'm likin' this model!

I saved up and bought this Roomba for my enclosed patio when both of my Dirt Dogs passed away and IRobot stopped making them....sigh....I really miss being able to use the Dirt Dog to sweep outside and in the garage. The IRobot people said this unit would work just fine in those areas, but I'm not going to put something I spent this much money on to clean up dropped screws and leaves! That said, I like this Roomba very much in our enclosed patio. I LOVE the two HEPA filters, which are easily blown out with a can of air or compressor after a vacuuming sesson. They're picking up a lot of dust that my regular vacuum misses....Ok, that I miss when I'm using the regular vacuum, which also has a HEPA filter. They pick up feathers and seeds from the birds, and lots of hair from the cats and dog. Mission accomplished. It does a nice job of moving from hard surfaces (concrete, in this case) to rugs, and cleaning them all well. Technology is really improved in this... 4/5 Janet "intersectionc" (GILROY, CA USA) - See all my reviews, October 22, 2011

Is the 760 a worthy upgrade from the already popular roomba 560? What about the LG RoboKing?

Is the 760 a worthy upgrade from the already popular roomba 560?In a nutshell, the roomba 560 is already a great product with a 1-2 remaining quirks after so many iterations of irobot, bugs should be fairly bedded down by now.The main difference between the old model and this is, the 760 has:1) a larger better designed bin "Aero Vac 2"2) Hepa filters meaning you get cleaner air vented out3) better designed brushes which is more robust and allows for more efficient suction4) better casing protection for the internal motors from dust and hairX) NO bin full indicator - my apologies, only the 770& 780 have this.5) a remote controller6) doesn't get stuck as often on a rug - in fact, hardly ever.Apart from that both the 760 and 560 have the same dirt detection and scheduling features. Whether you think the price difference of $80-100 is worth the upgrade is your call.Roombas 770 and 780 offer a better... 4/5 AgogoLive - See all my reviews This review is from: iRobot Roomba 760 Vacuum Cleaning Robot for Pets and Allergies (Kitchen) Is the 760 a worthy upgrade from the already popular roomba 560?In a nutshell, the roomba 560 is already a great product with a 1-2 remaining quirks after so many iterations of irobot, bugs should be fairly bedded down by now.The main difference between the old model and this is, the 760 has:1) a larger better designed bin "Aero Vac 2"2) Hepa filters meaning you get cleaner air vented out3) better designed brushes which is more robust and allows for more efficient suction4) better casing protection for the internal motors from dust and hairX) NO bin full indicator - my apologies, only the 770& 780 have this.5) a remote controller6) doesn't get stuck as often on a rug - in fact, hardly ever.Apart from that both the 760 and 560 have the same dirt detection and scheduling features.
